The Clay Collective is more than just an evening ceramics class; it's a 7-week journey into the heart of creativity, where every pinch, coil, and slab becomes part of your unique artistic expression.

Whether you're new to ceramics or looking to develop your existing skills, The Clay Collective welcomes you. Master the basics of hand building, discover how texture and color bring clay to life, or utilize our facilities to create your own ceramic masterpieces in a fun, friendly and supportive environment.

Whether you're looking to unwind after a long day, or ignite a new passion, this evening class is here for you. You'll experience the magic of transforming clay under your fingertips: from tactile textures to mesmerizing colors, uncovering ways to express yourself that you never thought possible.

Is This Evening Class for You?

Are you a budding artist, a curious beginner, an experienced ceramicist or simply looking for a relaxing new hobby? If you're ready to get your hands dirty and your heart inspired, then yes—this class is for you! No prior experience? That’s perfect. Previous experience - that’s perfect too! This class is tailored to complete newbies or budding novices who want to revisit foundational skills. Everyone leaves with creations they're proud of.

Course Structure:

Week 1 Introduction, health & safety + Making a pinch pot
Week 2 Learning how to coil a bowl
Week 3Making a tall vase using slab building
Week 4Decorating with sgraffito techniques
Week 5 Exploring underglaze decoration
Weeks 6 & 7 Creating your own design or completing previous pieces

Once fired in the kiln, your pieces will be painted, glazed, and fired again, ready to take home and impress your friends and family!

Meet Your Tutor:

Our lead instructor, Joke Gossey, is not only a master ceramist but also a passionate teacher who believes in the transformative power of art. Originally from Belgium, she has been living in New Zealand for over 20 years, where she first discovered her love for pottery. With years of experience in both creating and teaching, she brings warmth, expertise, and a sprinkle of fun to each class.

Inspired by organic forms and textures from the natural world, Joke creates functional yet expressive ceramic pieces that bring beauty into everyday life. She's dedicated to helping others discover the joy of working with clay, guiding you into the magical world of ceramics where art meets everyday function.

This course isn’t just about learning to mould clay; it’s about moulding your inner artist, discovering your creative potential, and bringing beauty into the world with your own two hands.

What Do I Need to Bring?
  • Please bring an apron or work shirt
  • If you have any favourite tools you are welcome to bring them too
  • Clay, which can be purchased in the TLC shop (material fee includes firing of clay.)
What Will Be Provided?
  • Tutor will supply additional tools and templates as needed
  • Use of studio equipment for hand-building and decorating techniques

If you wish to cancel, email us at least 14 clear days before your class begins. You'll receive a full refund less an admin fee of $20 via the same payment method (e.g., credit card or Afterpay) if you cancel within this timeframe.

Unfortunately, refunds aren't available for cancellations with less than 14 days' notice, nor for missed classes within a series.

This class will be held on campus at The Learning Connexion located at 182 Eastern Hutt Road, Lower Hutt. Specific details of where on campus your class will be held will be sent to you the week prior to the commencement of your class

All our tutors are qualified and practicing artists who are skilled in specific art forms and regularly teach to support others in their own art practices.
