Modern Macramé
Discover the world of modern macramé in this fun and creative workshop. Over 7 weeks, you’ll learn a variety of knots and techniques to make everything from keychains and earrings to plant hangers, bags, and wall hangings. You’ll explore macramé as a form of functional art and mindful practice, creating beautiful and useful objects from rope and twine.
Whether you’re brand new to crafts or looking to add a new skill to your creative toolkit, this class offers an accessible, meditative way to get making. All materials are provided to get you started—and there’s plenty of room to experiment and personalise your projects.
What You’ll Learn:

What You’ll Create:
Throughout the course, you’ll complete a range of functional and decorative macramé items, including:
- Keychains or earrings
- Plant hangers
- Market bags
- Wall storage hammock or cat swing (Time permitting)
- Personalised projects (Time permitting)
You’ll leave with a collection of handmade pieces and the skills to continue your macramé journey at home.
Course Structure:
Weeks 1–2: Learn core knots & make smaller items (keychains, jewellery)
Weeks 3–5: Move into medium-sized projects like plant hangers & bags
Weeks 6–7: Explore larger or personalised projects, including wall storage or hammock-style pieces
Each week includes time for hands-on practice, pattern exploration, and creative experimentation.

Meet Your Tutor:
With roots in Pennsylvania and a lifetime love of traditional crafts, your tutor brings a rich background in crochet, rug-making, embroidery, and macramé, along with a Bachelor of Fine Art and teaching experience across the US, UK, and New Zealand.
Since settling in New Zealand in 2005, she has taught art and crafts over many years . Her mission is to inspire creativity, connection, and mental wellbeing through craft—and to show that anyone can enjoy the creative process, no matter their experience level.
What Do I Need to Bring?
Optional supplies if you wish to go beyond the planned projects:
- Dowel rods or wooden rings
- A laundry drying rack (for large-scale projects like hammocks)
- Any helpful tools or supports from home, as needed
What Will Be Provided?
A wide range of materials to get you started, including:
- Cotton rope (various colours)
- Wooden rings (various sizes)
- Dowel rods
- Household string and twine
- Scissors
- Keyrings and clasps
- Earring hooks and hoops
When is the course?
Wednesday Evenings, 6 to 9PM, 7th May to 18th June
If you wish to cancel, email us at least 14 clear days before your class begins. You'll receive a full refund less an admin fee of $20 via the same payment method (e.g., credit card or Afterpay) if you cancel within this timeframe.
Unfortunately, refunds aren't available for cancellations with less than 14 days' notice, nor for missed classes within a series.

This class will be held on campus at The Learning Connexion located at 182 Eastern Hutt Road, Lower Hutt. Specific details of where on campus your class will be held will be sent to you the week prior to the commencement of your class
