Intro to Enamelling
Date: Saturday 12th April 9:30am-4:30pm and Sunday 13th April 9:30am-4:30pm
This is an exciting immersive introduction to enamelling, where you’ll learn how to fuse enamel onto copper to create stunning, colourful designs.
Using both torch and kiln techniques, you’ll gain hands-on experience in applying and firing enamel while exploring different decorative methods.
Whether you’re new to jewellery-making or looking to expand your skills, this workshop will provide you with the essential techniques to continue enamelling at home.
What you will learn
- How to prepare copper for enamelling.
- Applying enamel using sifting, wet packing, and scraffito techniques.
- The process of firing enamel using both torches and a kiln.
- Stencilling and decorative applications in enamel design.
- An understanding of the equipment and materials needed to continue enamelling at home.
You’ll leave this workshop with a solid foundation in enamelling techniques, hands-on experience , and a completed pair of enamel earrings that showcase your new skills.

Day 1:
- Introduction to enamelling and its processes.
- Preparation and cleaning of copper.
- Discussion on different types of enamels and their applications.
- Hands-on practice applying enamel using sifting and wet packing techniques.
- Firing your first enamel pieces using both kiln and torch methods.
Day 2:
- Open studio time to design and create your own enamel project.
- Introduction to stencilling and decorative techniques.
- Discussion on tools and materials for a home enamelling setup.
- Final firing and finishing touches on your work

Philip Brodie is an accomplished silversmith and enamellist. Philip has developed a passion for sharing his knowledge and helping students unlock their creative potential. His workshops provide an encouraging environment where students can learn, experiment, and develop confidence in their craft

What materials do I need to bring?
- A notebook
- An apron
- A face mask
- Emery paper (600 grit and 1200 grit) ie Sandpaper
- Enclosed footwear (mandatory)
- Long hair must be tied back
- People with allergies should bring their own gloves
Can anyone do this class?
Yes! This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some enamelling experience looking to refine their skills.
If you wish to cancel, email us at least 14 clear days before your class begins. You'll receive a full refund less an admin fee of $20 via the same payment method (e.g., credit card or Afterpay) if you cancel within this timeframe.

This class will be held on campus at The Learning Connexion located at 182 Eastern Hutt Road, Lower Hutt. Specific details of where on campus your class will be held will be sent to you the week prior to the commencement of your class
