This hands-on, two-day intensive weekend workshop is suitable for all levels and introduces artists to six major paint mediums through practical experimentation and guided comparison. Participants will explore how different binders, surfaces, and drying times affect color, texture, and expression.
Rather than focusing on finished works, the workshop emphasizes material understanding, historical context, and informed artistic choice.

- Understand the fundamental differences between paint mediums, including oil, acrylic, watercolour, tempera, casein, and distemper
- Learn how binders, pigments, and surfaces interact to affect color, texture, and durability
- Gain hands-on experience applying traditional protein-bound paints such as egg tempera and casein

About Your Tutor:
Marc has a background in film, starting at Shepparton Studio in the 1970s, art directing commercials. In New Zealand he continued working in film and theatre; a notable highlight designing several successful operas directed by renowned opera director Bernd Benthaak. Marc also has more than 20 years of sculpture and played a significant role in the Olympic sailing campaign.
Marc has been tutoring art at The Learning Connexion for over 25 years and is represented by Exhibitions Gallery in Wellington.

What do I need to bring?

Ultramarine and raw sienna paints (Blue and a light earth colour)
- Cheap watercolour pad
- Small canvas
- Visual diary/notepad for note taking.
What will be provided?
- Ultramarine and raw sienna pigments (this is not paint!)
- Relevant binders
Ultramarine and raw sienna pigments can be purchased directly from the tutor in class if you want some more of your own!
Can anyone do this class?
Yes! This workshop is suitable for all levels, and absolutely beginner-friendly. If you love being creative, you’ll fit right in.
If you wish to cancel, email us at least 14 clear days before your class begins. You'll receive a full refund less an admin fee of $20 via the same payment method (e.g., credit card or Afterpay) if you cancel within this timeframe.
