Discover the art of repurposing jewellery in this hands-on, two-day workshop. 

Learn how to melt down and redesign your old keepsakes into personal, one-off pieces. Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to expand your jewellery making skills, this workshop is designed for you to learn how to transform old or unworn jewellery into beautiful, custom-designed pieces.

What You’ll Learn
  • Sorting, assessing and preparing jewellery for melting
  • Sketching out new jewellery concepts
  • Refining concepts into feasible designs
  • Casting metal via sand, cuttlefish or organic processes
  • Filing, sanding and polishing jewellery
  • Adding stones, engravery

What's Covered:

Day 1

  • Plan and design pendant, ring or earrings.
  • Decide on type of casting  i.e. sand, cuttlefish or organic (coffee beans, lentils, chickpeas, straw).
  • Melting down old jewellery.
  • Pouring and casting.

Day 2

  • Continuing on from day one’s pouring and casting.
  • Sanding and polishing.
  • Completion of new jewellery.

  • Up to three finished jewellery pieces
  • A ring, pendant and/or earrings

Artist Bio: Nikkie Gibson

Nikkie is an accomplished jeweller and tutor here at The Learning Connexion

She is an award winning contemporary jeweller, with more than twenty years of experience in her field. Her jewellery is influenced by the organic forms of Art Nouveau and the rigidity & structure of industrial & mechanical objects.

Do I need any experience to join?
No prior jewellery making experience is needed.

What materials should I bring?

  • Old gold or silver jewellery to be melted down
  • Pen(cil) and paper

Please also remember:

For health & safety in the jewellery studio: wearing closed shoes and having your hair tied back if it's long is essential. We will send you a reminder email closer to the time.

If you wish to cancel, email us at least 14 clear days before your class begins. You'll receive a full refund less an admin fee of $20 via the same payment method (e.g., credit card or Afterpay) if you cancel within this timeframe.

Unfortunately, refunds aren't available for cancellations with less than 14 days' notice, nor for missed classes within a series.

This class will be held on campus at The Learning Connexion located at 182 Eastern Hutt Road, Lower Hutt. Specific details of where on campus your class will be held will be sent to you the week prior to the commencement of your class
